Cancel or fix billing

This page explains cancellation and payment failure honestly: what stops working, what never stops working, and how to recover.

Cancel your subscription

1. Open Settings → the Organization group → Licenses.
2. Select Manage billing to open the Stripe Customer Portal.
3. Cancel the subscription there.

The Seats & billing section then shows the date your plan cancels.

Know what happens after cancellation

• Your organization keeps its 10 free editor seats permanently. Cancelling only removes purchased seats.
• Your notes are untouched — they live in your own OneDrive and SharePoint, not in Orbit. See Where your notes live.
• If 10 or fewer editor licenses are assigned when the subscription ends, nothing changes for anyone.
• If more than 10 licenses are still assigned, editing pauses for your whole organization until an admin revokes licenses down to 10. Orbit shows this state plainly: “Editing is paused for your whole organization.” with a Review licenses shortcut for admins.

Reading is never blocked. Even during a pause, everyone can open, search, and read every note they had access to.

Fix a past-due payment

When a payment fails, Orbit gives you a 3-day grace period before anything pauses:

1. During the grace period, admins see a warning with the exact pause date and the plan row is marked past due.
2. Select Manage billing and update the card in the Stripe Customer Portal.
3. Once payment succeeds, the warning clears and nothing pauses.

If the grace period runs out while more than 10 editor licenses are assigned, editing pauses organization-wide. Two ways out, both immediate:

• Fix payment — editing resumes as soon as the subscription is current again.
• Revoke licenses down to your 10 free seats in the Licenses tab.

Note

The pause only ever applies while more editor licenses are assigned than your free allotment. An organization using 10 or fewer seats is never paused — not by cancellation, not by a failed payment.

FAQ

Can I export everything before cancelling?

There is nothing to export — every note is already a markdown file in your own Microsoft 365 storage, and it stays there whether or not you subscribe.

Do revoked editors lose their work?

No. They keep read access to everything, and their notes stay where they are. See How editor seats work.
