Organize folders and tags

Group notes with real OneDrive/SharePoint folders and mark cross-cutting states with tags.

  1. Click the New (+) button next to the Notes header at the top of the file tree.
  2. Choose New folder and name it.

To create inside an existing folder, right-click it and choose New folder here — folders nest. The same context menu offers New note here and New drawing here, so you can build out a section without leaving the tree. Hovering over a folder row also reveals a small + (Add inside) button with the same choices.

Folder names can’t contain ? * : < > — Orbit rejects them with Special characters like ? * : < > are not allowed in names.

Drag any note or folder onto a folder to move it — the tree highlights the target with Move into “{name}”. Select multiple notes first to drag them together. Prefer dialogs? Right-click and choose Move to to pick a destination folder, including Notes (root).

Moving between workspaces is its own operation: right-click → Move to workspace or Copy to workspace.

The file tree’s sort menu offers Name A-Z (the default), Name Z-A, Modified newest, Modified oldest, and Manual. Folders list before notes, and with modified sorts a folder counts as fresh as its newest note. The choice is per-workspace and personal to you — except Manual order, which is shared: drag a note or folder to a new position and it moves for everyone using Manual order.

Tags mark states and cross-cutting themes — #draft, #needs-review — without moving anything (when to use which: Build a wiki that stays current).

  1. Open a note and find the tag bar under the note header.
  2. Click Add tag.
  3. In the Tags editor, type in Search or add tag… and press Enter to pick an existing tag or create a new one.

The editor shows your Current tags, the workspace’s existing tags, and Shared tags. Remove a tag with the × on its chip.

  • Open the Tags view in the sidebar to browse notes by tag.
  • Tags are indexed for search. Only tags assigned from the tag bar count — a # in the note text (such as #2872 or #launch) is ordinary content, and a tags: line in a note’s YAML header is shown in Properties but is not an Orbit tag.
