Where your notes live
Every Orbit note is a plain markdown (.md) file stored in your organization’s own Microsoft 365 tenant — this page shows you exactly where those files are and what that means for governance.
Find your files in OneDrive or SharePoint

Folders you create in Orbit are real folders in that location, and each note is one markdown file. Images and attachments you add to a note upload to an _attachments folder in the same location, and drawings are stored as files there too. Nothing needs an export step to leave Orbit — the files are already yours.
Open a note file directly
Section titled “Open a note file directly”- Open OneDrive (for a personal workspace) or the workspace’s SharePoint site (for a team workspace).
- Open the Orbit folder or document library.
- Open any
.mdfile.
The file is readable markdown in any editor. Orbit edits the same file you see there — there is no separate copy.
Apply retention, DLP, and eDiscovery
Section titled “Apply retention, DLP, and eDiscovery”Because notes are ordinary files in OneDrive and SharePoint, your existing Microsoft 365 controls apply to them with no Orbit-specific setup: retention policies, sensitivity labels and data loss prevention, eDiscovery searches, and any backup tooling that covers OneDrive and SharePoint. Access to a team workspace follows the SharePoint site’s own permissions — see Permissions.
Edit a file outside Orbit
Section titled “Edit a file outside Orbit”You can edit a note file directly in OneDrive, SharePoint, or a synced folder. Orbit checks the file’s version before every save, so it detects outside changes and merges them or surfaces a conflict instead of overwriting them. When you next open the note in Orbit, you see the latest file content.
For everyday writing, edit in Orbit — comments, live collaboration, and wiki links work there.
Does deleting a note in Orbit delete the Microsoft 365 file?

Does changing access in SharePoint change access in Orbit?
Section titled “Does changing access in SharePoint change access in Orbit?”Yes. SharePoint site permissions decide who can read and write a team workspace, and Orbit follows them. See Permissions.
Does Orbit copy my notes into its own database?
Section titled “Does Orbit copy my notes into its own database?”No. Note bodies stay in your tenant. Orbit’s database stores operating metadata only — see Data residency.
